In 2016 the Gymnastics SA High Performance Program (Gym-JETS) will be introducing the WAG Junior Talent Academy. The objectives of the Junior Talent Academy are to:

  1.  Support clubs and coaches to identify and develop talented athletes
  2. Develop a cohesive community of coaches and gymnasts
  3. Identify and develop athletes through the International Levels Program including Team Future
  4. Focus on developing physical abilities and overall fitness as a means to promote higher quality, healthy and injury-free participation in gymnastics

The Junior Talent Academy will target 6-9 year-olds and include two parts – Profile Testing Sessions and Training Clinics.

Profile Testing Sessions

A gymnast’s physical preparation is one of the most important facets of their development. Gymnasts must develop a strong base of strength, power, speed, endurance, agility, balance and flexibility progressively and consistently throughout their training. Tracking this area of development over time will aid coaches and athletes to improve areas of weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

Profile Testing Sessions will run for approximately 3 hours, followed by a specialist lecture for coaches. Gymnasts will be required to perform specific exercises across 5 areas of development (leg strength, core strength, upper body strength, handstands and flexibility).  Each area has approximately 3-4 exercises and will be measured by time, repetitions completed in a period of time or maximum repetitions. Coaches will receive a feedback result document on their athletes’ performance via email following the testing session.

Training Clinics

Following each Profile Testing Session, a selection process will occur for the top athletes to be invited to attend a ‘Junior Talent Academy Clinic’.

Training Clinics will be hosted in the Gymnastics SA State Training Centre.  These clinics will be conducted by GSA High Performance Program Coaches and include guest presenters.  Training sessions will involve focusing on preparation and skill development for the International Levels (IL) pathway. Ballet and Trampoline development will also be a focus as it is an essential part IL development.

Clubs are invited to enroll suitable athletes to each Profile Testing Session. Please note there will be no competition requirement to attend Profile Testing Sessions.
