Gymnastics SA Statement | Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) Review

In September 2020, Gymnastics Australia (GA) commissioned the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to undertake an independent review into the culture and practices of gymnastics in Australia, in response to reports from the gymnastics community of unacceptable experiences.

The review was commissioned so we could better understand the sports culture, athlete experience and any barriers to reporting misconduct or abuse – right across the sport from local clubs to states and territories and at a national level.

The Australian Human Rights Commission has today published their report following their independent review of the culture and practices of gymnastics in Australia. Gymnastics South Australia acknowledges the deeply personal realities that the 2021 Independent Report into Gymnastics in Australia has recounted.

We offer our heartfelt and unreserved apologies to all athletes and family members who have experienced any form of abuse participating in the sport. We recognise and support all the individuals who participated in the review, and bravely shared their lived experiences. We have an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing and safety of all people involved in gymnastics and support Gymnastics Australia, State Associations, Affiliated Clubs and officials to ensure the learnings and recommendations from this review are utilised for the betterment of the sport and the safeguarding of all participants.
