Youth Leadership Day – Wrap-Up

During the July School Holidays Gymnastics SA was proud to host Youth Leadership Day, a group of workshops to help junior coaches develop the skills needed to excel in a coaching pathway. On July 11th, 2022, we welcomed 22 candidates from Barossa Valley Youth Club, Blackwood Gymsports, Eyre Gymnastics, Hub Gymnastics, Kara Kara Rhythmic Gymnastics, Koorana Gymnastics, Saints Gymnastics, Tea Tree Gully Gymsports, Victor Harbor, and YMCA Glengowrie, including six members of our Youth Advisory Panel.

We were lucky to have Sophie and Emma from Seacliff Gymnastics to kick off the day, detailing their recent trip to Czech Republic representing Australia in Aerobic Gymnastics. An inspirational talk about the journey as an athlete and coach to reach the international stage, and they also introduced Aerobic Gymnastics to the candidates.
Andrew Moxham, from HyperGym, ran the group through a wide variety of warm up games and ideas for side stations and activities to engage children. The group had a great time learning and experimenting with activities that they can take back and use within their clubs.

Before lunch Jo Davidson presented the Inclusion Workshop launched from Gymnastics Victoria. This practical workshop helped candidates understand the barriers community members may face when approaching clubs and how these barriers can be reduced.

Candidates then discovered some tips and tricks on how to communicate effectively with young participants, especially those with additional needs. The final session introduced candidates to Performance Gymnastics and how Acrobatics can be used to enhance a display routine.
The day concluded with a session at Beyond Bouldering where everyone challenged themselves and worked hard to reach the top of the walls. Everyone discussed the new concepts they learned and what they would like to take back to their club to improve their own coaching.

Thank you to all our candidates and presenters for such a fun day!
